5 ways to getting a greener home
Whether you live in a high rise apartment, an independent home or even a gated community, there are unlimited benefits to introducing an element of green to your home interior. The size or the quantity is not the determinant of the quality and benefit of such an intervention. This simply put is the literal meaning of “you reap what you sow”.
In fact, landscaping your home specifically the interiors can reduce air toxicity, act as an air coolant, reduce internal bad odour, make your home visually attractive, as well as give the occupants a physiological mood boost…!
1. Reduce air toxicity :
Plants naturally have a tendency to do exactly the opposite of what we do. While we intake oxygen (O2) and emit carbon dioxide (CO2), the plants take in CO2 and emit O2.
Plants have also been proven to reduce the levels of formaldehyde and benzene, which are toxins being emitted by our furniture and rugs and other house hold appliances.

Areca palm or Chrysalidocarpus lutescens is a classic example of a great indoor plant that reduces indoor air pollutants and replaces it with clean air.
2. Natural air coolant :
Indoor plants cool interior temperatures by consuming hot air for their natural processes. They also cool down the space by adding humidity to a room through the process of transpiration which is when moisture from a leaf evaporates. This naturally occurring process in turn lowers the micro climate of the space.

When Aloe vera or Aloe barbadensis Mill is grown indoors, it aids in cooling the temperature as well as filters the air. An added benefit is that you can use it on sun burns!
3. Reduces odour :
We all probably know the feeling of an enclosed space smelling unpleasant, so we crack open a window or open a door to let in some fresh air. But imagine a plant that is actively filtering bad odor and replacing it with fresh air?

Raphis excelsa is an apt example for a high function air filtering plant leading to bad odor reduction indoors.
4. Visual quality boost :
Boosting the overall appearance of a drab interior with a beautiful green plant is well known. It doesn’t just stop at the color, but the visual appeal lies in the pattern on the leaves as well as the structural quality of the plant. A great combination of color pattern and growth pattern in a plant makes an excellent addition to any room.

Snake plant or Sansevieria trifasciata is an amazing plant to look at due to the unique snake like leaves and multicolor leaf pattern. This is the only plant that is also known to emit oxygen at night; hence you can place it in your bedroom as well.
5. Mood booster :
You don’t need a landscape architect to tell you the visual beauty a green happy plant can add to a space, but did you know that plants when kept in proximity to people’s spaces can improve the overall mood and positivity of a person? House plants are good for your health but studies have proven that plants improve concentration and productivity, and reduce stress levels as well as boost your mood.

Money plant or Epipremnum aureum is one of the most common and easy to maintain plants for indoor usage; they require light to medium sunlight and can be placed directly in a jar of water.
An indoor plant for many people can help enhance the mood and living space that is soothing and relaxing to live in. Starting with a simple plant indoor can greatly affect your quality of life.
