13 plants to bring home right now!
For these plants, you don’t need a terrace or a balcony, all you need is a little bit of space inside your home. Once you’ve decided to have plants indoors, it’s all about the species as well as the placement of the plants. Watering a plant is a basic requirement, but location is what helps nourish a plant along with the care you decide to put in.
So which plants belong in which room, how much light if any is required, and what are you going to ask your local nursery? Here is a guide to help you make the right choices for the right places at home.
1. Living room / Hall
Here we start with the heart of the house, this is where you are prone to have a lot more activity, and you need plants that are not only lush green but are also visually attractive.
Plants like Anthurium andraeanum, Zamioculcas zamiifolia and Philodendron xanadu.

Anthurium andraeanum requires high light conditions but not direct light so this plant is best kept next to a well-lit window. They require moderate watering, making it a perfect addition to any well-lit space. They are available in many colours too!

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is one of the easier plants to grow due to its low maintenance. They require less water and moderate light, and are able to grow in corner spaces as well.

Philodendron xanadu enjoy being watered and the soil should be slightly moist most of the time, be sure to give them their sun as well, by taking them out once a week, to prevent the leaves from yellowing.
2. Dining room :
The dining room is a space where there is activity at least three times a day. This means there is a low chance of naturally occurring sunlight here. The best species for overall ambience are Dracaena reflexa with their bright leaves, Fern plants and Spathiphyllum or Peace lilys.

Dracaena reflexa also known as “song of India” is a vibrant slow growing plant that can be kept on tables. They enjoy being misted and not watered making it a great plant to keep atop furniture. Their bright colour livens up any space.

Fern plants are the best indoor plants to put in hanging pots; they require water misting every day and moderate light.

Spathiphyllum is adept at surviving in low light conditions and also requires low watering for the beautiful hooded flowers to bloom.
3. Kitchen :
The kitchen is where an array of aroma is found. Why not choose a plant that gives out another enticing aroma? It would also be a good idea to choose a plant that you can use for cooking as well. Keeping that in mind, Indian tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), Peppermint (Mentha arvensis)and Basil (Ocimum basilicum) are great choices for the kitchen and here’s why.

Indian Tulsi grows well under ample sunshine. It can thrive in small amounts of soil as well, making it a perfect plant for the window sill.

Mint needs a wide surfaced planter that should be kept in a well-lit window sill and regularly watered, as mint requires moist soil for its growth.

The secret for basil to grow well is well drained soil. Watering is a must, but the pot should have a draining point for the soil to be well maintained for the Basil to be happy.
4. Bathroom :
I am sure you’re surprised to see this here, but plants can thrive even in your bathroom! Given the conditions of use here, we must be aware of the humidity from daily showers or baths, and so Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) and Money plant (Epipremnum aureum) are ideal for the bathroom as they enjoy humid micro climates.

Lucky bamboo is a great plant that is considered for Feng Shui. They need indirect sun and require a water change once a week. No soil is required and slight trimming of old plant tips will help it look green longer.

The money plant needs no introduction; this plant is probably the most prominent indoor plant. It needs indirect sun and is also low maintenance. It can thrive both in potted soil and water alone.
5. Bedroom :
An average person spends most of his time at home in his bedroom. So obviously, the plants required here are those that emit oxygen during the night time. This is so that the person who is using the space at night has fresh air rather than CO2, which is emitted by a majority of the plants regularly at night. Some good choices for your bedroom are Aloe vera or (Aloe barbadensis Mill) and Snake plant or Sansevieria trifasciata because both of these plants are well known to emit oxygen during the night time.

Along with releasing O2 in the night, Aloe vera is a low maintenance indoor plant which can grow well in India. Water sparingly and give space near a medium lit area and Aloe vera will grow faithfully.

The snake plant seldom needs water and can thrive in most light conditions, but prefers low light conditions. When watering, you should be careful to not wet the leaves and water the soil directly and make sure not to over water.
There are plants for every space - indoor as well as outdoors, it’s up to you to place them carefully and they will faithfully reward you with constant growth while adding a beautiful fresh aesthetic to your home.
